I was interviewed recently by a student studying English. The
interview was part of his research for a dissertation on
Representations of Science in Literature. Early in the interview
came the killer question: ‘Is the dystopian view of science adopted
by many authors a response to the bombastic hubris of scientists?’
– not ‘some scientists’ but ‘scientists’. We were all in the dock,
