Breaking bread

There are many ways to break bread.

I have just torn a crust apart

to make no more than tasty mouthfuls.

 

One could cut it neatly into enough

slices for that five o’clock tea

my mother remembers when the parlour

 

was not only open to the family

but everyone who called that afternoon

-even the coalman was allowed in

 

but kept rubbing his sooty hands …
